About Ackley
Ackley started as a railroad bet: a surveyor for the Dubuque and Pacific line, J. William Ackley, liked the spot for a station, bought land with three partners, and the town was staked out in 1857 and named for him, though he never lived here. When the rails finally arrived in October 1865 the place boomed, and by 1869 it was an incorporated town with a brick school, frame churches and a busy main street. Over the next thirty years brick storefronts, a waterworks, a light plant and hotels replaced the frontier buildings, and on September 17, 1903, neighbors gathered for the first Sauerkraut Days, a celebration the city still keeps. A steel water tower at Main and Cerro Gordo, the 1939 Municipal Building and the old depot by the tracks still mark the skyline. Today about 1,600 people call Ackley home, and its kids are AGWSR Cougars, part of a district formed in 2001 with Wellsburg and Steamboat Rock.
