About Adams
Adams carries the name of the family that started it: Tyler Adams, a pioneer from Indiana, settled this stretch of Gage County in 1857, and in 1873 John O. Adams struck a deal with a railroad that wanted to lay track across his land, and a village grew up along the line. By 1910 nearly 650 people lived here, and in 1908 the Farmers State Bank went up on Main Street, a dignified Renaissance-style building that later served as the post office and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Main Street is still the heart of town, and visitors coming in off Highway 41 are greeted by an entrance park with five flags honoring every branch of the military. Adams is also home to Freeman Public Schools, where the Falcons gather, and its City Park keeps shady picnic shelters, a playground and courts busy all summer. Today about 600 people live here, some 25 miles south of Lincoln, and the village still turns out for its Fourth of July barbecue and fireworks and for Adams Community Days, with ball games and tractor pulls.
