About Adel
Adel started out in 1847 as Penoach, a small seat for the brand-new Dallas County on land beside the North Raccoon River, and took its present name two years later. A flour mill on the river in the 1850s drew more settlers, and when the railroad finally arrived in 1879 local boosters added waterworks, hotels and a library. Brickmaking grew out of the area's glacial clay in the 1880s, and starting in 1892 that brick went into the streets, beginning with the courthouse square, where residents chose to keep repairing it instead of paving over it. At the center of it all stands the 1902 Dallas County Courthouse, a French Renaissance-style building of Bedford stone with round corner towers, a red tile roof and a clock tower 128 feet tall. A few blocks away, the Adel Historical Museum fills an 1850s brick schoolhouse-turned-home on Main Street with everything from the old mill's gear wheel to a room honoring Nile Kinnick and his grandfather, Governor George W. Clarke. Today Adel is a growing county seat of about 6,000 near Des Moines, best known for its brick-street square and the summer Sweet Corn Festival, where volunteers cook and hand out seven tons of free sweet corn.
