About Akron
Akron took its name from Akron, Ohio, and was incorporated as a city on September 7, 1882, on the Iowa side of the Big Sioux River in northwest Plymouth County. The town counted about 500 people in 1890 and more than doubled by 1900, when the rail line carried traveling actors, musicians and speakers out to farm towns like this one. A Des Moines insurance company promised the townspeople an opera house if they bought enough policies, and the $18,000 building on Reed Street opened in 1906 with 600 seats that hosted plays, operas, Chautauquas, basketball games and dances; it joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. Akron anchors the northern end of the Loess Hills Scenic Byway, and more than nine miles of trails follow the river, the Dunham Prairie and the Higman Wetlands. Today about 1,560 people call Akron home, children go to Akron-Westfield, a district shared with Westfield since 1981, and every September the Great Akron Scarecrow Festival fills the City Park with scarecrows, pie and bingo.
