About Albia
Albia started in 1845, when commissioners picked a spot for the seat of what was then Kishkekosh County and laid out a town called Princeton around a central square on a compass-straight grid; it took the name Albia and was incorporated in 1856. The railroad reached town in 1866, and in the early 1900s the coal mines and camps that ringed Albia made Monroe County the top coal producer in Iowa, paying for the brick storefronts that still line the square. In 1902 the county laid the cornerstone of a buff sandstone courthouse with a square clock tower, and it has anchored the square ever since. When a newspaper once called Albia the ugliest town in Iowa, banker and designer Robert T. Bates rallied neighbors in 1965 into "Operation Facelift," and the restored square went onto the National Register in 1985. Today about 3,700 people live among Victorian homes like the brick "Four Sisters," and the Main Street district still fills up for events like the December Victorian Stroll.
