About Albion
On April 13, 1871, fourteen men came up the Beaver Creek valley from Columbus and camped where Albion now stands; their first job was a sod house, and a three-day prairie windstorm flattened part of the wall before they ever got a roof on it. The next fall Loran Clark, who owned the town site, showed voters a plat drawn on paper and promised to survey it if they made it the county seat; they picked Albion over Boone, 67 votes to 21, and he platted the town on October 9, 1872. Local lore says the name itself was settled over a game of euchre, two players for Albion and two for Manchester. When the railroad from Columbus reached town in June 1880, a big crowd cheered as John Peters drove the first spike, and Albion grew quickly as the end of the line. Today the Carnegie library from 1908 still lends books on South 3rd Street, and the 1937 post office still shows Jenne Magafan's mural of Nebraska in winter.
