About Alda

Settlers were working the land around Alda by 1859, and the little community that took shape here around 1860 was first called Pawnee, after the Pawnee people. It later took the name of Alda, the first baby born in town, the child of a Union Pacific Railroad foreman, and in 1873 the whole place shifted to its present spot so it could sit right on the railroad. Early Alda was a section house, a depot, grocery stores, a schoolhouse and grain storage; the village incorporated in 1916, and farming and manufacturing have carried it since, with Merrick Machine Company building here from 1960. Today about 650 people live along U.S. Highway 30, seven miles west of Grand Island, with Husker Harvest Days spreading over its show grounds just northwest of town each September. South at the Alda exit off I-80, the Crane Trust Nature & Visitor Center opens its trails, bison herd and 35-foot observation tower along the Platte, where sandhill cranes gather by the tens of thousands every March.
