This week in Alliance
About Alliance
Alliance began in 1887 as Grand Lake, and when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad arrived in 1888 the superintendent gave it a short new name near the top of the alphabet; in eight weeks some 250 buildings went up from lumber shipped in by rail. After fires in 1892-93 the town turned to brick, which is why downtown's storefronts still carry early-1900s dates and the parade route runs down Box Butte Avenue. It sits at the western edge of the Sandhills, where the Knight Museum and Sandhills Center tells the railroad and ranching story and keeps county records open to anyone researching family. Just north of town, Jim Reinders and about 35 family members raised Carhenge in 1987, a ring of gray-painted vintage cars that the site's owners gave to the citizens of Alliance in 2013.
