About Alma
Alma got its start in the spring of 1871, when a band of Union Pacific railroad workers came east from Cheyenne and settled in the Republican River valley; the town took the name of one settler's daughter, and that July it became seat of the brand-new Harlan County, a title it defended all the way to the Nebraska Supreme Court in 1884. The Burlington railroad steamed in during January 1880, and the town incorporated the next year, adding telephones, a steam power plant and city water by 1907. After the Republican River's deadly 1935 flood, the Army Corps of Engineers built Harlan County Dam between 1946 and 1952, and the lake behind it, Nebraska's second largest, now laps at Alma's doorstep with fishing, boating, bald eagles in winter and trails with long views of the water. On West Main Street the brick City Auditorium and Sale Barn of 1922-23 has hosted cattle sales, a 1948 county music festival and a century of community events, and the old Carnegie library on John Street joined it on the National Register in 2021. Today about a thousand people call Alma home, filling the volunteer-run Parrot Theater, the Hoesch Memorial Library in City Park and the stands for the Cardinals.
