About Alta
Alta began as a railroad town: a store went up in 1870, and two years later the Iowa Falls & Sioux City Land Company laid out the town along the Illinois Central line in western Buena Vista County. The rich farm country around it filled the depot with grain and livestock, and by 1882 roughly 700 people supported three general stores, four blacksmiths, two elevators, a gristmill and their own weekly paper, the Alta Advertiser. Congregations put down roots early, from the Methodists' frame church of 1876 to the Swedish Lutherans' 125-foot steeple of 1881 and the little Gothic Revival Danish Lutheran church of 1887, which stood on West 4th Street until 2024. In 2018 Alta and neighboring Aurelia joined their schools into one district, and the Alta-Aurelia Warriors still play in Alta. Today about 2,100 people live six miles west of Storm Lake on Highway 7, and the community library in the VFW building on Lake Street keeps a busy week of story times, S.T.E.A.M. playdates, bingo and knit nights.
