About Alton
Alton began in 1875 as East Orange, a stop laid out where the railroad had just been extended across Sioux County's farmland. A few years later, in 1882, the town took the name Alton, and in 1883 it was incorporated as a city. It grew up along the Floyd River, and today the river anchors a county park with a pond and disc golf, plus a pool, ball fields and a walking trail. Folks here are proud of the Sioux Golf and Country Club, which the city calls the oldest nine-hole course in Iowa, and of St. Mary's Catholic Church, which sits on the highest ground in town and can be spotted from miles away. With roughly 1,250 neighbors, a new industrial park and the motto 'Love where you live,' Alton is a small town still growing.
