About Anamosa
Anamosa started out in 1838 as a settlement called Buffalo Forks beside the Wapsipinicon River. It was Lexington for a while, and in 1877 it took the name Anamosa so its mail would stop going to all the other Lexingtons. Stone built the town. Limestone from the local quarries went into the castle-like state penitentiary, people still call it the White Palace of the West, and into the brick-and-stone blocks that line Main Street. Grant Wood, the painter of American Gothic, was born here and is buried in Riverside Cemetery under a big stone lion. Today the Jones County seat calls itself the Pumpkin Capital of Iowa. Every October Pumpkinfest brings the giant pumpkin weigh-off to town, and Wapsipinicon State Park sits right at the edge of town for a walk in the woods.
