About Ankeny

Ankeny began in 1875, when John Fletcher Ankeny and his wife Sally laid out a town on 80 acres beside the new rail line between Des Moines and Ames. For years it was a small farm town known for sorghum and hogs, with coal mines nearby in the early 1900s. A wartime ordnance plant became John Deere's Des Moines Works in 1947, and Des Moines Area Community College built its main campus here starting in 1968. Today it is one of Iowa's largest and fastest-growing cities, with about 60 parks, more than 100 miles of trails, the all-inclusive Miracle Park playground, and a big SummerFest every July.
