About Ansley

Ansley was born in the summer of 1886, when the Lincoln Land Company bought ranchland from Anthony Wilkinson along the new Burlington and Missouri River railroad and platted a town, naming it for a woman who had invested in lots there. The first residents lived among tents and lumber piles, hauling boards by wagon from Kearney, sixty miles away, until frame stores, banks and hotels went up along Main Street. By 1918 neighbors had formed a township library and collected hundreds of books for anyone in the township to borrow. Ansley sits at the crossroads of Highways 2, 92 and 183, gateway to the Sandhills between the Loup valleys, in good grazing and farming country. Downtown still runs along Main between Railroad and Cameron streets, with a municipal auditorium, a veterans memorial, a township library and about 459 residents.
