About Arapahoe
Arapahoe began in the spring of 1871, when a town company organized in Plattsmouth under Captain E. B. Murphy set out to plant a settlement in the Republican River valley; surveyors staked the townsite that July and named it for the Arapaho people who had lived on this land. A post office opened in 1872, and a sawmill and gristmill on Muddy Creek west of town cut the timber for its first buildings. For a few years Arapahoe was the seat of the new Furnas County, until a long contest sent the courthouse to Beaver City in 1876, but the town kept growing anyway, with its own newspaper, the Public Mirror, from 1882 and its own telephone company in 1904. During the Great Depression, WPA crews built a swimming pool and solarium in the city park, a park that had been part of the town plan from the very first survey. Today about a thousand people live here, and old storefronts still line Nebraska Avenue, where the Furnas-Gosper Museum keeps the corner of Main Street and Allen's Block holds its spot just to the north.
