About Arnold
Arnold began with a covered wagon: in 1880 Richard Allen and his young family, bound for Kansas, turned up the South Loup Valley instead and stopped where the land lay level and the water ran plenty, riding out the brutal winter of 1880-81 in a sod house and then a log cabin. In March 1881 Allen, Landis Correll and George Arnold met to name the new post office in Allen's sod house, and George Arnold's name won; the town was laid out in 1883, betting on a railroad that took almost thirty years to come. When the tracks finally arrived on June 14, 1912, nearly 6,000 people turned out to celebrate. Pioneer rancher Sarah Finch left her estate to build a library in memory of herself and her husband Swain, and the blond-brick Finch Memorial Library on North Walnut Street opened in January 1925; it is now on the National Register. Today about 590 people call Arnold home, "Growing Great Things" among Sandhills canyons and the South Loup River, with Thursday farmers markets downtown, movies at the Rialto, and the Sandhills Open Road Challenge every August.
