About Atkinson
Settlers first put down roots here around 1875, and when the railroad pushed through in 1880 the town was platted and named for Col. John Atkinson, one of the original owners of the site. Atkinson sits in the Elkhorn Valley just north of the Elkhorn River, where U.S. Highway 20 meets Highway 11, and it grew up serving the farm and ranch families around it. Each August since the early 1900s the town has marked the end of hay harvest with Hay Days, now three or four days of dances, a parade, games in the park and duck races. Visitors love the Sturdevant-McKee Museum, a Queen Anne house built in 1887 for Brantly Sturdevant and listed on the National Register, and the 50-acre Mill Race Park on the river, with its fishing lake, campground and Bluebird Trail. Today about 1,300 people call Atkinson home, with a new preschool-through-high-school campus for the West Holt Huskies, the Cowboy Trail running through town, and a dozen sets of painted wings on downtown buildings from the Wings Project.
