About Auburn
Auburn began in 1882 when two rival railroad towns a mile apart, Sheridan and Calvert, joined together, and the next year it became the Nemaha County seat. The courthouse was set on the hill halfway between them, and Courthouse Avenue, lined with old homes, still ties the two old downtowns together. Auburn has been a Tree City USA since 1976, the longest run in Nebraska, and when the new library opened in 1996, volunteers moved the books with a school bus and children pulling wagons.
