About Audubon
Audubon began as a railroad bet: the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific laid out the town in September 1878, auctioned its lots that October, and by the time the tracks were finished in December some fifty houses, two hotels, five general stores and a schoolhouse had already gone up on the prairie. The railroad even built a courthouse and offered it to the county rent-free, and in 1879 voters moved the county seat here from Exira; the next year Audubon incorporated, with land agent Ethelbert J. Freeman as its first mayor and the man behind its waterworks and electric plant. The town and county both carry the name of the bird painter John James Audubon, and downtown honors him with ceramic tile mosaics of his bird prints set into the brick sidewalks and a mural of his river trip inside the post office. On the south edge of town stands Albert the Bull, the 30-foot statue the Jaycees raised in 1964 as a tribute to Iowa's beef industry, right where the T-Bone Trail sets off south through Hamlin, Exira and Brayton. Today about 2,000 people live here, cheering on the Wheelers, catching a show at the Rose Theater, bowling at the Audubon Recreation Center and gathering in the 1912 Carnegie library on North Park Place.
