About Avoca
Avoca got its start in 1869, when the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad pushed through the Loess Hills between the West Nishnabotna River and its East Branch, and the town borrowed its name from the Irish river in Thomas Moore's song about where two waters meet. Merchants like Charles Norton, who opened a general store at the new rail stop and later built a brick Italianate house with a stair tower on North Chestnut, helped it become the trading town for the farms around it. Because the county seat sits far off at Council Bluffs, the county built a red-brick branch courthouse on Elm Street in 1885, and it is still the only one of its kind in Iowa. Neighbors love small treasures too: the little eight-sided chapel at Graceland Cemetery from about 1875, and a public library that began in 1898 in a club member's home and has lived on North Elm since 1980. Today about 1,680 people call Avoca home, with a busy brick downtown kept lively by Avoca Main Street, a town pool, and AHSTW Vikings games on Friday nights.
