About Axtell
Axtell grew out of 1870s homesteads in western Kearney County and became a village in 1885, when the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad laid its tracks to the spot; the town took its name from a railroad man. Swedish settlers left a deep mark on the countryside: Salem Swedish Methodist Episcopal Church, rebuilt in 1898 southwest of town, still stands in its Carpenter Gothic dress, and in 1913 Lutheran pastor K. G. William Dahl founded Bethphage, a home and community for people with developmental disabilities whose stepped-gable halls and Zion Chapel now sit on the National Register. On Christmas Day 1953 KHOL-TV went on the air from a small studio near Axtell, bringing television to much of central Nebraska, and its successor still broadcasts from Highway 44 east of town. So many windmills once turned over the yards here that Axtell is known as the Windmill City. Today about 730 people live in the village, 15 miles south of Kearney, where farming leads the economy, Main Street keeps its brick storefronts, and the purple-and-white Axtell Wildcats fill the calendar from one-act plays in October to the Holiday Tournament in December.
