About Bancroft
Bancroft was platted in 1880 on land the Barber family deeded to the railroad, and the settlers wanted to call it Barbersville until the Barbers politely refused the honor. Its real claim to fame arrived in 1900, when a 19-year-old John G. Neihardt moved here, learned the stories of the neighboring Omaha people, and later began his epic Cycle of the West in a one-room study behind his house. That little 1890 study was restored in 1967, and today it sits beside a museum and the Sacred Hoop Prayer Garden at the John G. Neihardt State Historic Site, where Neihardt Day brings a poetry picnic every August. Main Street still holds its brick bank buildings and a 1994 Community Building, and the Bancroft-Rosalie Panthers play at a school that grew out of a 1982 merger. About 500 people live here, a short drive from Pender and West Point.
