About Bassett

Bassett sits in the Nebraska Sandhills where U.S. Highways 20 and 183 cross, and the city says it marks the exact middle of Highway 20, the longest road in the country. Ranchers brought big Texas cattle herds to this grass country in 1878, and Captain A. N. Bassett, who ranched along Long Pine Creek, is one of the men the town may be named for; the town was platted in 1884 once the railroad came through, and it is now the Rock County seat. Locals love the 1939 Art Deco courthouse and the 1949 Bassett Lodge and Range Cafe, both on the National Register, along with the Rock County Historical Museum, which fills a 1921 railroad depot, a 1938 log cabin and a moved country church out at the fairgrounds. Folks gather for the Parade of Lights in early December and a Trunk-or-Treat downtown on Halloween afternoon. About 540 people live here, and a big cattle-drive photo has hung over the Range Cafe counter since opening day.
