About Battle Creek
Battle Creek got its name from a fight that never happened. In 1859, territorial militia and U.S. dragoons closed in on a Pawnee village in the Elkhorn River valley, but the Pawnee surrendered first, and Chief Petalesharu met the soldiers wrapped in an American flag and holding a peace pipe, so the stream nearby became Battle Creek anyway. Settlers founded the town beside it in 1867, and the creek still runs along the city's west edge before it joins the Elkhorn. Today about 1,200 people live here, 11 miles southwest of Norfolk, with a Main Street downtown, the Lied Battle Creek Public Library on South 4th Street, and Heritage Park, which tells the town's story from its first Native people and pioneers through the 1930s. Families fill the bleachers for the Battle Creek Braves, and neighbors have teamed up to bring the community pool back for the next generation.
