About Bayard
Bayard began in 1888 a mile west of where it stands now, named by Millard and Jap Senteny after their old hometown of Bayard, Iowa, and the little settlement soon picked itself up and moved to its present spot on the railroad. Growth was slow until 1917, when the Great Western Sugar Company built a big factory near town and Bayard became a second-class city that same year. Just south of town rises Chimney Rock, the slender spire that guided Oregon, California and Mormon Trail travelers up the North Platte valley and became a National Historic Site in 1956. Bayard has claimed the rock as its own: the city raised money to light it with LED fixtures in 2017, and since 2023 gravel trails lead walkers all the way to its base. Today about 1,100 people live here among the farms and ranches, with a 1928 brick Burlington depot turned volunteer museum and Chimney Rock Pioneer Days every September.
