About Beaver Crossing
Beaver Crossing was platted in 1875, hoping the railroad was about to arrive, though the trains did not come until 1887. The name comes from a spot where an old trail from Nebraska City to Fort Kearny crossed Beaver Creek, and the village's own history traces its roots to a feeder trail running from Fort Leavenworth toward the Oregon Trail. Today it sits a few miles south of Interstate 80 at Exit 369 in Seward County, and a beaver mascot greets visitors along Dimery Avenue near the edge of town. On May 11, 2014, a powerful EF3 tornado damaged nearly every building, yet no one was killed, and neighbors rebuilt. Children ride a free bus to Centennial Public School near Utica, and the village library opens on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. About 375 people lived here at the 2020 census, with Smith Creek Recreation Area nearby for camping and fishing.
