About Bedford
Bedford was laid out in the summer of 1853, the same year the legislature made it the seat of Taylor County, and town legend says a barrel of whiskey sat on the square while the first lots changed hands. It started life as Grove, took the Bedford name in 1856, and grew around a courthouse square, with Main Street later sloping east toward the railroad. The brick storefronts that rose along it in the late 1800s are so well kept that the downtown is a National Register historic district. The present courthouse, a red-brick Romanesque Revival building with two conical-roofed turrets and a clock cupola, went up between 1892 and 1893 for $38,000, and the county even gave its builder a gold watch for holding to the price. Today about 1,500 people live here, the Carnegie-era library on Jefferson Street keeps a community calendar, and Lake of Three Fires State Park sits a few miles to the northeast.
