About Beemer
Homesteaders came to the Elkhorn valley here by prairie schooner in 1864, living first in dugouts and sod houses, and a year later August Lambrecht built a water-powered flour mill on Rock Creek that gave the neighborhood its first name. When the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad came up the valley in 1871, its water stop and telegraph station here were called Rock Creek too. In 1885 Allen D. Beemer and two partners laid out a village beside the tracks; Beemer built the first depot, pushed for a wooden bridge over the Elkhorn, and in 1886 the new post office and the incorporated village took his name, the same year he started the Beemer Times. Five churches, a brick school, waterworks and electric lights followed, and Holy Cross Catholic Church and the old Congregational church, now Beemer Community Church, still stand a few blocks from Main Street. Today about 600 people live on the tablelands above the Elkhorn, nine miles northwest of West Point, with the 18-hole Indian Trails course on the river bluffs to the south and their kids cheering on the West Point-Beemer Cadets.
