About Bellwood
Bellwood began with a family and a stand of planted trees. J. D. Bell bought the land from the Union Pacific in 1872, noticed the plains had almost no trees, and ordered hundreds of saplings from an Illinois nursery. When a new railroad was surveyed from Lincoln toward Yankton, he offered free right-of-way if the line would build a station on his farm, and in 1879 the deal was struck. The Ladies Aid Society was asked to name the new town, and Mary Finch's suggestion, Bells Woods, soon shortened to Bellwood on the depot sign. Today pivot irrigation sweeps the surrounding Platte Valley corn and soybean fields, about 400 neighbors share a ball park, park shelter and auditorium, and kids ride on to David City for high school.
