About Belmond
Belmond grew up on the banks of the Iowa River in north Wright County, and by 1879 its readers were already sharing books in a reading room above Pritchard's store. In 1917 a local farmer, Henry Crist, gave the land and paid the whole cost of a free public library himself, after the library board decided against Carnegie funding and its strings. On October 14, 1966, an F5 tornado tore through Belmond, killing six people and wrecking or damaging some 600 homes and 75 businesses, and the town set about rebuilding, raising a new library in 1972 and, years later, nearly a million dollars more to expand it. Belmond has kept building ever since: a new elementary school, city hall, fire station, hospital, walking trail and a community-owned movie theater. Today about 2,463 people live here, cooling off on the big water slide at Luick Memorial Pool, walking the river park, and cheering on the navy and Kelly green Belmond-Klemme Broncos.
