About Benkelman
Benkelman grew up where the north and south forks of the Republican River meet, in the far southwest corner of Nebraska, as a cattle town first called Collinsville after Moses Collins. Texas herds were driven north across thick buffalo grass to fatten here, and the railroad renamed the town for stock raiser J.G. Benkelman, whose shipping yards were among the biggest around; in 1882 a new depot drew the whole town north of the tracks. Benkelman incorporated in 1887 and won the county seat by quietly building a courthouse while rival towns argued, and it rode out drought, homesteaders leaving and the Dust Bowl as a shipping point for grain, livestock and cream. Its brick Dundy County Courthouse of 1921 is known for its geometric ornament, the volunteer-run Zorn Theatre on Chief Street still shows new movies every weekend, and the Dundy County Museum serves frosties and homemade pie at a working soda fountain inside a former hospital. Today about 820 people live here among irrigation circles and sandhills, cheering on the Dundy County-Stratton Tigers and gathering each fall for the Benkelman Craft Fair and each Christmas for an evening of shopping local.
