About Bennet
Bennet began with a bargain in 1871: when the Midland Pacific Railroad needed a strip of William Roggencamp's land along the Little Nemaha for its line from Lincoln toward Nebraska City, he agreed to sell only if the railroad laid out a town by his home, and the plat was filed that July 29. Railroad officer John Bennett gave the new station his own name, and somewhere along the way the town dropped the last t. By 1900 nearly 500 people lived here, with general stores, hardware stores, lumber yards, blacksmiths, a grain elevator, banks, an academy and even an opera house. In 1910 the town put a gazebo in the middle of Bennet Park, and it has served ever since as a bandstand, a wedding spot and the place where parades get called. After lean decades when farms consolidated and families left for the cities, Bennet has been growing again as Lincoln families look for a small-town home about ten miles out. Today it is a city of about 1,100 on Highway 43, home to Bennet Elementary and the Palmyra OR-1 Panthers, with an annual hot dog roast in the park and Christmas in the Parks in December.
