About Bertrand

Bertrand sits on the Hi-Line along Highway 23, the high ground between the Platte and Republican rivers, where the first homesteaders arrived in 1877 and stuck it out through drought, blizzards and prairie fires. By 1882 most of the surrounding countryside had been claimed, the railroad pushed through in 1884 and gave the town a name borrowed from one of its officials, and on December 11, 1885, Bertrand became a village. Farms still ring the town, and Minor Avenue keeps its row of red-brick storefronts, including a two-story corner block with a fancy brick cornice. The pre-K through 12 school keeps the calendar full of Vikings games, concerts and plays, and the Ag Society's fall craft show draws a crowd to the community building and the old school gym. Today about 710 people live here among tree-lined streets, a nine-hole golf course, a nursing home and senior center, and a new pool with a zero-depth entry and a climbing wall.
