About Big Springs

Before it had its present name, the settlement was called Lone Tree, after a lone cottonwood that Pony Express riders and Oregon Trail travelers used as a landmark. The Union Pacific named its stop Big Springs in 1867, and steam locomotives drew water from the spring beside the tracks until 1950. The town was platted in 1884, and the next year the Phelps family built the Phelps Hotel, which still welcomes overnight guests as a bed and breakfast on the National Register. The county fair was held here from 1889 to 1932, and the village incorporated in 1917. Today about 400 people live along Pine Street near the I-80 and I-76 junction, and kids go to school with Brule neighbors at South Platte, home of the Blue Knights.
