About Bloomfield
Bloomfield was incorporated in January 1855 and grew up as the county seat of Davis County, just a short drive from the Missouri line in southeast Iowa. Its heart is the square: 55 commercial buildings, nearly all brick, put up between the 1850s and the 1890s ring a park with the Davis County Courthouse in the middle. That courthouse, finished in 1877 in the Second Empire style, has a mansard roof and a clock and bell tower topped by a statue of Justice that can be seen for miles, and its lawn has long hosted band concerts and community gatherings. The Tudor-trimmed Carnegie library opened in 1913, gained a new wing in 2018, and today its teens and staff put on a one-day Renaissance Faire on the courthouse lawn. About 2,700 people call Bloomfield home, and the year runs from the Davis County Fair in July and the old-time music festival in September to Trick or Treat on the Square and Hometown Christmas.
