About Blue Grass
Long before there was a town, travelers on a trail between the Mississippi and the Cedar rivers camped at a point of timber here, and the grass that came back after their stays had a bluish tint, so the spot became Blue Grass Point. Farm families began arriving in 1836, the post office took the name Blue Grass in 1840, and in 1853 three founders platted a village whose streets, the story goes, were named for their wives, which is why Mayne and Juniata streets still carry their old spellings. A fire in August 1903 pushed residents to incorporate so they could raise money for fire equipment, and H.F. Wunder became the first mayor. East of town, the Nebergall 'Knoll Crest' Round Barn, built in 1914 with a clay-tile base and a cupola on its conical roof, still stands on the National Register. Today about 1,666 people live here along Highway 61, with five city parks, a Scott County Library branch sharing a building with City Hall, and a Park Board Pumpkin Dash that reached its 15th year in 2026.
