About Blue Hill
Blue Hill owes its life to the railroad: surveyors platted it in September 1878 for Solomon B. Rohrer of Hagerstown, Maryland, and the first train rolled in that December, right on the Burlington line between the Republican and Little Blue rivers. Planners first meant to call it Belmont, but another Nebraska town already had that name, so the founders chose Blue Hill, after the hills of the Blue River and the bluish haze said to hang over them. Homesteaders filled it fast, and by early 1882 about a thousand people lived here. On June 24, 1890, a fire wiped out the whole north side of Gage Street, and the merchants rebuilt it in brick; many of those storefronts still line Main Street today, near the 1912 Burlington depot and the old grain elevators. Blue Hill now tells its own story on a downtown historical mural, from the country schoolhouse and the steam engine to the Blue Hill arrow and the Fourth of July fireworks that close out the town's biggest day of the year.
