About Brady

Brady began as a handful of tents and sod houses beside the Platte River, and the story goes that explorer John Fremont marked a trapper's island on his map as Brady's Island, which gave the place its name. Union Pacific crews camped nearby in the 1860s, and the town was formally laid out in 1889, then incorporated in 1907 when it dropped the Island from its name. Stockyards stretching nearly half a mile along the tracks once loaded cattle for market, and Fourth of July street carnivals drew crowds of thousands to Market Street. The 1925 school building still anchors town life, and the high school's first graduating class produced a future governor of Nebraska. Today Brady is a small farming community where volunteers keep the town tidy and everyone turns out for Brady Days on the first weekend of August.
