About Britt
Britt grew up beside the tracks: a depot went up in 1870 on the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul line, the town was laid out in 1878, likely named for a railroad engineer or brakeman, and it became a city in June 1881. In 1900 the first hobos rolled in for what became the National Hobo Convention, and every second weekend of August since, the town has crowned a Hobo King and Queen, opened its Hobo Jungle to visitors and gathered for a parade, a car show, crafts and music. Britt made a run at the Hancock County seat beginning in 1898 and kept at it until a 1903 vote settled the matter for Garner. A Carnegie grant in 1916 gave the town a Jacobean Revival library, which opened in 1918 and served until the library moved to Main Avenue South in 1968. Today about 2,000 people live here, trains still haul grain through on the Canadian Pacific, the ornate George E. Stubbins House sits on the National Register, and the West Hancock Eagles call Britt home.
