About Broken Bow
When a handful of families near the middle of Custer County asked for a post office in 1879, Washington turned down their first names; homesteader Wilson Hewitt then sent in 'Broken Bow,' likely after a broken bow found at an old Native American camping ground, and it stuck. Jesse Gandy platted the town in 1882, and by fall the newcomer had won the county seat from Westerville. Its square, the town's first park, was planted with trees on Arbor Day 1886 and still fills on summer Thursday evenings, and today the nearby Sandhills draw visitors of their own. Solomon Butcher, whose camera recorded Custer County's homesteaders and more than a thousand of their sod houses, lived in Broken Bow from 1915 to 1926.
