This week in Brooklyn
About Brooklyn
Brooklyn took its name in 1854 from its spot between Big Bear Creek and Little Bear Creek, and the railroad's arrival in 1862 gave the young town room to grow. By 1870 about 1,250 people lived here, and the hometown line that sticks today is Community of Flags, born when an avenue of flags welcomed RAGBRAI riders in 1991. Now fifty state flags climb a hill beside the museum toward an 80-foot pole you can spot from Highway 6. Downtown keeps a 1930 glazed-block Standard station, a 2015 Historic Route 6 mural built for car-and-motorcycle photos, and the 1911 Opera House, brought back to life in 2020. A small boy named Marion Morrison, later John Wayne, spent part of first grade here, and a marker at his old Jackson Street home says so.
