About Buffalo
Buffalo began in 1833 when steamboat captain Benjamin Clark settled on the Mississippi bank, and by 1836 he and two partners had platted a town and named it for Buffalo, New York. It was the first town platted in Scott County, and the coal found nearby in 1834 was sold to passing steamboats. Its first public school opened the same year, and generations of local children went on to learn in the brick schoolhouse that opened in 1900 on Fourth Street. That building later served as a community center and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The river here runs mostly east to west, which makes Buffalo unusual on the Mississippi. Today about 1,200 people live in this Quad Cities river town, and the library branch in the old Dodge Street school building hosts crafts, book clubs and story times.
