About Burwell
Burwell was platted in 1883 on the North Loup River in the Sandhills, became the seat of newly organized Garfield County, and grew once the Burlington railroad reached it in 1887; it is still the only incorporated town in the county. In 1906 H. J. Coffin put up the three-story Hub Building of stone-like concrete on Grand Avenue, and it lent space to the town's first library until the Burwell Woman's Literary Club won a Carnegie grant for the buff-and-red brick library that opened in 1914. Local real estate man Homer Stokes came home from a Kansas rodeo convinced Burwell should have one too, and the rodeo that began in the early 1920s on the fairgrounds south of town grew into Nebraska's Big Rodeo, now in the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame and still held in its original wooden covered grandstands. A bronze bucking horse and rider, Cowboy Hang-Time, greets visitors at the east edge of downtown. Today about 1,100 people live here, a short drive from Calamus Reservoir, and the town comes together each fall for Save the Pumpkins, Scare on the Square and the downtown Sip & Shop.
