About Cairo
Cairo, which locals say as KAIR-oh, began in 1886 when the Grand Island and Wyoming Central Railroad pushed its tracks northwest across Hall County and a town grew up at the end of the line. Its founders named it for the capital of Egypt and carried the theme into the street map, so a drive through town still turns up Egyptian names like Suez. The village incorporated in 1892, and in 1948 photographers recording Mennonite farm life came through to picture its cattle herds and family places. Since 1967 its children have gone to Centura Public School just up Highway 11, shared with Boelus and Dannebrog and cheering for the burgundy-and-white Centurions. Today about 820 people live here, 16 miles from Grand Island, with a downtown business district, a golf course, a pool and new splash pad in the city park, painted Wings Across the Heartland murals at the community center telling bits of local history, and crowds each June for the CornStalk Festival.
