About Callaway
Callaway was platted in 1885 at the end of the Union Pacific line coming up the Wood River grade from Kearney, and promoters named it for the railroad's general manager, Samuel R. Callaway. The village calls itself the Heart of the Seven Valleys, after the valleys of the James, Turner, Brown, Rye, Sand, Loup and Wood River, remembered in a rhyming poem every local seems to know. The last train ran through in the 1980s, though townsfolk still say you can hear the whistle of the line each day. Today about 560 people live here, and the calendar is packed with the Pioneer Picnic and Seven Valleys Rodeo each June and the Kite Flight on Labor Day weekend. The Seven Valleys Historical Museum keeps the story in a main building, an annex, a courthouse in the park, an Episcopal church and a jailhouse, and a brand-new swimming pool opened in 2024.
