About Camanche
Camanche grew up on the Iowa bank of the Mississippi just below Clinton, with a post office open by 1837 and a first school class gathered the following year; the town took its name from the Comanche people. River lumber built it, and sawmill owner Horace Anthony put up a square brick house in 1852 that sheltered freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad and still faces the park he gave the town. On a June Sunday in 1860 a violent tornado flattened nearly every building and took dozens of lives, and Camanche had to rebuild almost from scratch. Today about 4,570 neighbors share river-view parks, a public library perched over the water, a restored 1899 depot with a bright caboose, and a bike trail that runs north to Clinton. Summer evenings bring naturalist-led Blue Heron cruises out of Rock Creek Marina, while the town turns out in royal blue and white for the Camanche Storm.
