About Cambridge
Cambridge sits on the west bank of Medicine Creek, close to where it meets the Republican River, and it was laid out in the 1870s by J. W. Pickle under names like Pickleville and Medicine Creek. When the railroad came up the valley in 1880, local businessman W. E. Babcock reasoned that a valley with an Oxford ought to have a Cambridge too, and the name stuck. Merchant W. H. Faling, the town's first chairman, built a columned Neoclassical house on Parker Street in 1909 that is now a bed and breakfast on the National Register, and in 1914 a concrete deck arch bridge was built to carry the road over the Republican just south of town. Today about 1,070 people call Cambridge home, with McKinley Park and its pool, splash pad and historic creek bridges on the east edge of town, an 8,000-square-foot museum on Penn Street, and Harry Strunk Lake ten minutes to the north. Each year the Chamber brings everyone out for Medicine Creek Days and its parade, Halloween trick-or-treating and a holiday open house.
