About Carlisle
Carlisle grew out of an early settler's stubbornness: Jeremiah "Uncle Jerry" Church tried twice to build a town along the rivers near Fort Des Moines, and after the Flood of 1851 swept his town of Dudley away, he laid out Carlisle that same year on safer ground and named it for Carlisle, Pennsylvania. A flour mill, a little schoolhouse and a row of stores came first. When the railroad arrived in 1871, the business district moved from the hilltop down to the tracks in the valley, and the hill stayed home to houses and churches. The town sits between the North and Middle Rivers just above where they meet the Des Moines, and today the paved Summerset Trail starts here and runs 11 miles past prairie and wetlands to Indianola. Neighbors love the Water Tower Park, the old Randal House and a downtown that packs in with kids for PumpkinFest every October. Now home to about 4,160 people in Warren and Polk counties, Carlisle calls itself "The Natural Choice."
