About Carroll
Carroll was laid out in 1867 along the new railroad across western Iowa, and two years later the growing rail town took the county seat from Carrollton. The trains kept it busy: in 1896 the Chicago and North Western built a sturdy Romanesque Revival depot, and after it joined the National Register in 1990 the town restored it into the home of today's chamber of commerce. Books came early too. A women's study group, the Clio Club, opened a small subscription library in 1894, and a Carnegie grant gave Carroll a Prairie School library that opened in January 1906 and now holds the Carroll County Historical Museum. When the new library opened a block away in 1975, residents lined up in a human chain to pass the books across. Today about 10,300 people live in this Middle Raccoon River town, which still tells the story of the 1960 snowstorm when a plane carrying the Minneapolis Lakers came down safely in a nearby cornfield.
