About Carter Lake
Carter Lake exists because of a single spring flood: in March 1877 the Missouri River jumped its banks and cut a new channel about a mile and a quarter to the southeast, leaving this neighborhood, and the oxbow lake that gives it its name, on the Nebraska side of the water. The lake soon filled with rowboats and fishing parties, with hotels, clubhouses and a boathouse along the shore, and two amusement parks, Courtland Beach and later Lakeview, drew crowds in the early 1900s. Iowa and Nebraska argued over the land until the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1892 that it belonged to Iowa, and after years of paying Council Bluffs taxes without getting its services, residents broke away and incorporated their own Iowa city on July 2, 1930. Wilson Mabrey served as mayor for forty years, from 1934 to 1974, and locals still remember him through Mabrey Park and Mabrey Lane. Today about 3,800 people live in the only Iowa city west of the Missouri, where travelers to Eppley Airfield are surprised by a 'Welcome to Iowa' sign, the College World Series teams practice at Hamilton Sports Complex, and families gather at the lakefront, the golf course on the shore, the community center and the library that has served the town since 1977.
